Volunteering with GHEI can be an incredible experience. It is a chance to live and work in rural Ghana, and be a part of high impact projects that support GHEI health and education programs. Humjibre is a welcoming place and we also do our best to make you feel so:
What We Provide:
- All food and lodging during your stay in Ghana, including learning how to cook traditional food
- Cultural immersion in village tours, drumming and dancing events, home visits, and more
- Visits to Kumasi and Cape Coast
- All in-country travel plans and costs covered for the duration of your stay, from arriving at the Airport to boarding your flight home
Volunteers selected to be a part of the Serve and Learn team will be asked to fundraise $1,800 for 2-week sessions, or $2,200 for 4-week sessions in installments prior to their departure for Ghana. A third of the fundraising requirement, $600, is required at the time of acceptance as a non-refundable deposit to secure the position. The remaining funds are due May 15, 2013. All donations are tax-deductible and many past volunteers have hosted fundraising events, received grants or scholarships, or been sponsored by close friends and family to satisfy this requirement. GHEI staff and alumni are also available to assist you with fundraising ideas.
Volunteers are responsible for obtaining vaccinations, malaria prophylaxis, evacuation insurance, a visa and plane ticket. Our Volunteer Coordinator will provide guidance on pre-departure arrangements. Upon arrival in Accra, Ghana, you can expect to have minimal personal expenses. GHEI covers the cost of project-specific materials, lodging, major transportation, a handful of cultural experiences, as well as lunch and dinner daily.
We are currently accepting and reviewing applications for the 2013 Summer Serve and Learn Program. This means that GHEI's leadership will review applications in the order they are received. Applicants are encouraged to apply early as spaces may fill quickly. Applications are reviewed and selected applicants will be contacted for an interview. Offers are extended to successful applicants within one week of the interview and applicants are given one week to accept or decline GHEI's offer. This is done to allow ample time for fundraising, travel reservations, and general preparations for the trip.
